Getting started

How do I start tuning?
  1. Open FasTune on your iPhone or Apple Watch.
  2. Tap Allow when it asks to use the microphone.
  3. Play one string. The note lights up in blue, the meter shows how far off you are, and everything turns green when you're in tune.
Which devices does FasTune work on?

iPhone with iOS 26 or later, and Apple Watch with watchOS 26 or later. The Apple Watch app installs alongside the iPhone app.

When is FasTune available?

FasTune is in development and coming soon to the App Store. Leave your email and we'll let you know when it's out.

Do I need an internet connection?

No. All tuning happens on your device, so FasTune works anywhere, including on stage, in the woods or in airplane mode.

Apple Watch tips

The screen dims while I'm tuning.

Apple Watch dims a few seconds after your last touch, even while you're playing. To keep it on longer, open Settings → Display & Brightness → Wake Duration on your watch and choose Wake for 70 Seconds.

When I raise my wrist, I see the watch face instead of FasTune.

On your watch, open Settings → General → Return to Clock → FasTune and choose After 1 hour. FasTune will still be there when you raise your wrist.

I hear a faint tick with the haptic.

Apple Watch plays a small sound with every haptic. Turn on Silent Mode (Control Center → bell icon) to feel the tap without the tick. Turning off Sound in FasTune's settings keeps the haptic as light as possible.

Where should I hold my watch?

Closer is better. The fretting-hand wrist near the headstock works well for acoustic guitars. For an electric played unplugged, or in a noisy room, bring your wrist close to the strings or the sound hole.

Modes & tunings

What's the difference between Chromatic and Instrument mode?

Chromatic shows the nearest note for anything you play. Instrument locks onto the nearest string of your selected tuning and shows which string you're on.

Which tunings are built in?

22 tunings for 6, 7 and 8-string guitar and 4 and 5-string bass, including standard, Drop D, Drop C♯, C♯ standard, DADGAD, open tunings, and Drop G♯/A♭ for 7-string.

How do I create a custom tuning?

On iPhone, go to Settings → Tuning → New tuning. To start from an existing tuning, long-press a built-in tuning to copy it and change any string. Custom tunings sync to your Apple Watch.

My bass's low strings don't register.

Choose a bass tuning, even in Chromatic mode. The tuning tells FasTune how low to listen. With a 5-string bass tuning selected, FasTune detects down to low B (31 Hz).

Can I tune a ukulele, violin or other instrument?

Chromatic mode shows the nearest note for anything you play, so it works for many instruments. Built-in tunings and Instrument mode are designed for guitar and bass.

Settings

What do the settings do?
SettingWhat it does
Reference pitchA4 from 430 to 450 Hz. Most music uses 440.
In-tune range±1 to ±5 cents. Smaller is stricter.
Haptic tapA tap when a string comes into tune. On by default on Apple Watch, off on iPhone.
SoundA short blip when a string comes into tune. Off by default.
Keep last note on screenShows the last reading, dimmed, after the string stops ringing.
Show frequencyShows the exact pitch in Hz.
Show input levelA faint bar at the bottom that shows FasTune can hear you.
Do my settings sync between iPhone and Apple Watch?

Yes. Settings and custom tunings sync both ways. Haptic and sound are set separately on each device, so you can have a silent phone and a tapping watch.

What reference pitch should I use?

Leave it at 440 Hz unless you're playing along with a recording or group tuned differently. Some orchestras and recordings use 442 Hz, and some players prefer 432 Hz.

Troubleshooting

FasTune doesn't react to my guitar.

Check microphone access on iPhone: Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → FasTune. On Apple Watch, hold your wrist closer to the guitar's body or sound hole. In a loud room, get closer to the strings. Turning on Show input level lets you confirm FasTune can hear you.

The reading jumps around.

Let the note ring and play one string at a time. Fans, music or other instruments nearby can interfere. Lightly muting the other strings helps too.

My settings didn't sync.

Open FasTune on both devices with your iPhone near your watch. Changes made while they're apart sync the next time both are open.
